Cisco Access Points configured for FlexConnect have two switch methods available:
- FlexConnect Switching: Local
- FlexConnect Switching: Remote
Where Local switching is in use, the AP is managed by a central WLC but clients will receive an IP address local to where the AP is deployed and break out on to the network at that location.
Where Remote switching is in use, clients will tunnel their traffic back to a central controller (WLC) and break out onto the network at the controller. Clients receive an IP address in a range local to that controller. The AP will more than likely cease operation if the WAN connection back to the controller dies.
